Is my child hyperactive?
Instead of "hyperactivity," medical professionals today prefer the term ADD/ADHD: attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. When agitated behaviour and problems with concentration cause disturbances in the quality of your life, ADD/ADHD could be at hand... Today, there are clearly-defined criteria for a diagnosis.
Could your child be affected?
To find out, read our guide:
1/Does your child show the following criteria for hyperactivity?
-Wiggles the feet and hands often and fidgets in their seat.
-Gets up often in class or cannot stay seated.
-Runs often and crawls around in inappropriate situations.
-Cannot keep still during games or activities
-Act as they are on springs.
-Talks too much
2/Is your child impulsive?
-Answers questions before you can finish asking them.
-Has trouble waiting their turn.
-Interrupts frequently or disrupts conversations or games to make their presence known
If you answered yes to at least 6 out of 9 criteria, and if this behaviour lasts for more than 6 months, disrupting your child's development, he or she probably suffers from ADD/ADHD.
But don't panic!
This diagnosis is very important, because it will help you provide your child with the care they need. Make an appointment with your doctor, who can advise you on a course of treatment.
