Love stronger than pain
What is your preferred solution for easing pain? Aspirin? Paracetamol? Ibuprofen? Or perhaps, quite logically, an analgesic.
Instead of swallowing one of those little tablets, have you ever thought of contemplating your beloved's photo? You're kidding!
Instead of swallowing one of those little tablets, have you ever thought of contemplating your beloved's photo? You're kidding!
And yet, it is scientifically proven: physical pain can be reduced by simply contemplating a photograph of one's beloved (sic).
To verify this surprising theory, Sarah Master, along with fellow members of the University of California, recruited young girls who were then subjected to thermal impulsions of variable intensity. Result: slight burns. After each session, every subject had to evaluate the intensity of pain felt, using a scale from 1 to 10.
During this experiment, each volunteer was given a photo to look at, representing their partner, a perfect stranger, or even a chair. Researchers then noted that the simple contemplation of a photo of one's beloved was enough to reduce the intensity of pain felt. On the other hand, the photo of a perfect stranger had no effect whatsoever; the chair neither!
Then how can a simple photo, namely that of one's beloved, be enough to reduce the pain? “Looking at photos of one's beloved can stimulate images in the mind, associated with a sensation of being loved and supported, which can be enough to reduce the feeling of pain”, explain the authors, adding that “providing photos of loved-ones during painful sessions can be especially useful if the latter cannot be present” (l'ingrat...).
